2011 BAFTA nominations revealed

The King's Speech faces off against Black Swan

by Jennie Kermode

The 2011 BAFTA nominations were revealed this morning, and though there are no big surprises, competition is stiff in what has been an interesting year. Heading the home-grown pack is The King's Speech, with 12 nominations including Best Film, while Black Swan is in the same position. Colin Firth, who just took the Golden Globe for Best Actor in the former film, has the opportunity to repeat his triumph, but only if he can outshine impressive work by Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network and Javier Bardem in Biutiful. Meanwhile Globe winner Natalie Portman faces off against Annette Bening (The Kids Are Alright) and Noomi Rapace (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) for the Best Actress gong.

As with the Golden Globes, Toy Story 3 is the leading contender in the animation category, but elsewhere the slate is more diverse. There are five nominations for the Coen brothers' reworking of True Grit and three for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Dark comedy Four Lions is up against feminist celebration Made In Dagenham in the Outstanding British Film category while the Outstanding Debut category - always one to watch - includes nominations for Gareth Edwards (Monsters) and Nick Whitfield (Skeletons). There are also an impressive eight nominations for Danny Boyle thriller 127 Hours.
