Kate Winslet in dramatic fire rescue

Actress helps save residents after Branson house struck by lightning.

by Jennie Kermode

Kate Winslet was at the centre of a dramatic rescue last night after Richard Branson's guest house, where she was staying, was struck by lightning during a tropical storm. On the isolated isle of Necker, in the Virgin Islands, there was no outside help available as the flames swept through the large timber-framed structure, but fortunately no lives were lost.

Winslet, who first got her two young children to safety, was praised for her bravery in going back into the house to help rescue her host's 90 year old mother. London firefighters have since invited her to train with them and have said that they hope her example will encourage more women to consider firefighting as a career.
