The Palace rules at Flickerfest

Australian short film festival award winners announced.

by Jennie Kermode

Flickerfest is one of the world's biggest festivals of short film and one of the most important events of the Australian film calendar. With over 2,000 entries submitted annually, it's a great place to go if you want to spot new talent and the Flickerfest awards make it easy to identify the best of that if you live further away. This year, the big winners were from New Zealand, with Ebony Society taking Best Film. The story of two boys who break into a house only to encounter an unexpected situation, it's directed by rising star Tammy Davis.

The Palace, Anthony Maras' tale of a Cypriot refugee family hiding out in splendour during the Turkish invasion of the island, took this year's prize for Best Australian Film. Best Australian Director went to Nash Edgerton for Bear while Matthew Jenkin picked up the Best Australian Screenplay award for Cockatoo. The awards ceremony was followed by celebrations late into the night on Bondi Beach.
