Deus Ex joins Assassin's Creed in the race to the big screen.

by Jennie Kermode

Computer game adaptations look like being the next big thing in Hollywood. It was announced today that cyberpunk actioner Deus Ex is now heading for the big screen, with Assassin's Creed, starring Michael Fassbender, already in the works.

Deus Ex was originally slated for production in 2002, with Willem Dafoe in a starring role, but the project was subsequently abandoned. The new version will be produced by Andrian Askarieh and The Departed's Roy Lee.

Two short films have previously been made to tie in with the Assassin's Creed franchise. Fassbender is understood to be a fan of the film himself and to have helped to develop the project. He will star as abductee Desmond Miles and will also produce.

Both projects hope to tap into large existing fan bases, with the films tentatively scheduled for release in 2014.
