End of the road for hobbits

Peter Jackson will not adapt tales from the Silmarillion.

by Jennie Kermode

Following rumours that he was going to make an ongoing series of hobbit films based on stories in the silmarillion, Peter Jackson has confirmed that this is not the case. Speaking at Comic-Con in San Diego, he explained that he has not been able to get the rights to the book, which comprises a series of shorter stories surrounding those told in the Lord Of The Rings trilogy.

Despite their immenses popularity with fans, Jackson's original three films did not meet with the approval of author JRR Tolkein's estate. His final adaptation has been made in two parts. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is scheduled for release at the end of this year, with The Hobbit: There And Back Again to follow in 2013.

Despite the restrictions on Jackson's work, some high quality fan films have been adapted from tales in The Silmarillion, including The Hunt For Gollum and Born Of Hope.

Jackson is now expected to concentrate on forthcoming computer game adaptation Halo.
