Argo wins Best Film BAFTA as Affleck takes Best Director.

Emmanuelle Riva is named Best Actress - 52 years after her first nomination!

by Jennie Kermode

Ben Affleck's winning streak continued at the BAFTAS tonight, as he picked up Best Director and Best Film awards for Argo, making him odds-on favourite to take this year's top Oscars.

One of the most remarkable winners of the night was 85 year old Emmanuelle Riva. First nominated for Best Actress at the event 52 years ago, for Hiroshima, Mon Amour, she took home the same award for Amour.

Enjoying an unexpected level of success, both Skyfall and Django Unchained must now be hoping for a slice of Oscar glory. Accepting his awards, Quentin Tarantino thanked his fans for standing by what he described as "a hot potato," acknowledging his film's controversial status.

This year's Rising Star Award went to Juno Temple, and is all the more impressive because she's had less screen time in which to attact viewer attention than most of her competitors. Her role in The Dark Knight Rises was heavily cut but the future is certainly looking bright for her, with upcoming parts in Maleficent and the Sin City sequel.

A special award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema went to Tessa Ross for her work at Film4.
