Bling sting at Cannes

Thieves strike again at festival

by Richard Mowe

The Riviera crime spree which has been hitting the headlines during the Cannes Film Festival, received added impetus last night (Thursday May 23) when an expensive necklace was stolen from the Hotel du Cap at Antibes just along the coast from Cannes, where the likes of Michael Douglas, Sharon Stone and other A-listers stay, away from the bustle of the Croisette.

The De Grisogno jewellery house say it is worth more than two million euros. It was taken at an after party for festival-ites despite a security team being in place.

Shocked company director Fawaz Gruosi said: "It is the first time it has happened in our 20-year history."

Last week, thieves stole about $1 million worth of jewels after ripping a safe from the wall of a hotel room in Cannes. The jewellery was taken from the Novotel room of an employee of Chopard, the Swiss-based watch and gems maker that has loaned bling to A-list stars walking the red carpet.

If the audacious crime wave continues the organisers will be worried about the security of the trophies to be bestowed on Sunday, including the coveted Palme d'Or.
