This year's Frightfest line-up was announced today, with My Father Die, the directorial debut of Sean Brosnan (son of Pierce Brosnan) as the opening gala, and Sang-ho Yeon's tale of the commuting dead Train To Busan to close it. Now sponsored by the Horror Channel (having ended its relationship with Film4), the festival will feature 19 world premières and showcase work from 16 different countries.

Highlights of this year's festival include Todd Williams' adaptation of Stephen King novel Cell, starring John Cusack and Samuel L Jackson; Jackson Stewart's cautionary tale Beyond The Gates, which features genre favourite Barbara Crampton; and Emiliano Rocha Minter's Mephistophelean Mexican chiller Beyond The Flesh, which Alejandro Iñárritu has singled out for praise. There will also be the usual line-up of special guests, with details yet to be announced, plus a substantial short film strand and a series of special events, quizzes and giveaways.

"For 17 years now FrightFest has led the way through landmark changes in the genre, altered perceptions of fandom and embraced the revolutions in platforms and distribution models," said festival director Alan Jones. "t continues to do so this year with a breathtaking selection of genre attractions with the widest appeal and breadth of focus. We stand out because we stand for something special – a one-stop roadmap through everything you need to see to be totally up to speed with what the next year in horror fantasy will be all about."

Frightfest passes go on sale tomorrow, with single tickts to follow on the 23rd. The festival will run from the 25th to the 29th of August.
