Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush announced today that he has filed a defamation suit against newspaper The Sydney Daily Telegraph after it claimed last week that he had been subject to a complaint of 'inappropriate behaviour'.

The Pirates Of The Caribbean star strenuously denied the newspaper's claims and stated his desire to "redress the slurs, innuendo and hyperbole," which he said have done irreperable damage to his reputation and caused distress to his wife and children.

The newspaper's editor, Christopher Dore, defended the story and insisted that the reporting was accurate.

The story relates to a period in 2015 when Rush was starring in a production of King Lear for the Sydney Theatre Company. Rush has stressed that he is not taking any action against the company.

Last week, Rush stepped down from an ambassadorial role with the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) in order to protect his colleagues from any fallout connected to the story.
