A new cinema is to open in Glasgow, it was announced yesterday. Part of the Everyman company's 'boutique' approach to film viewing, it will be based in the city centre Princes Square shopping development and will have three screens, seating a total of 205 people.

An English company which launched in 2012 and has not previously operated in Scotland, Everyman has signed a 30 year lease on the property where the cinema will be built. It plans to fit out its auditoriums with comfortable couches and cushions, and viewers will be able to eat pizza and drink wine as they watch what is expected to be predominantly arthouse fare.

"Our focus is really on experience," said the company's CEO, Crispin Lilly. "We aim to make every guest’s visit special no matter what they choose to watch, and make them fall back in love with a night at the cinema."

Glasgow once had over 100 cinemas, more than any other city in the world, but now has just four operating in the city itself, with other venues screening films on an occasional basis. The new Everyman cinema is expected to open later this year.
