The full schedule for this year's Glasgow Youth Film Festival was announced today, with Lulu Wang's The Farewell revealed as the opening film. Described as a "brilliant and affecting drama" by Glasgow Film’s Children and Young People Coordinator, Rebecca McSheaffrey, it follows a family's efforts to arrange to say goodbye to their elderly grandmother without letting her know that she's been diagnosed as terminally ill.

The festival will feature a special address by Alan McDonald, screenwriter of last year's opening film, Anna And The Apocalypse. As well as a strong line-up of films which includes a late night screening of cult favourite Heathers, it will host a number of special events aimed at helping young people to explore careers in film, including a dedicated Careers in Film Day on 12 September.

"The GYFF Young Programmers have created a brilliant programme of screenings and workshops for 2019, particular highlights include the Scottish premiere of unique coming-of-age Norwegian drama Phoenix, and the brilliant documentary Drag Kids, followed by what is sure to be a lively Skype Q&A!" said Glasgow Film’s Youth Programme Officer, Emma McDonald. "The team have really brought their imagination to the programming, and the Closing Gala: Scott Pilgrim Vs The World is sure to be an unforgettable immersive screening."

The main festival, which is curated entirely by young people, runs from 13 to 15 September.
