Roma takes FIPRESCI Grand Prix

Cuarón's film to receive accolade in San Sebastian

Alfonso Cuarón's Roma has been chosen as best film of 2019 by the members of the International Federation of Film Critics, FIPRESCI and the director will receive the award during the 67th edition of San Sebastian.

The vote saw the participation of 618 critics worldwide, who chose this production from among all the films that were released after July 1, 2018.

The other Grand Prix finalists were Pain And Glory by Pedro Almodóvar, Parasite by Bong Joon-ho - which screens in the festival's Pearls section - and The Favourite, by Yorgos Lanthimos.

It is the latest in a long line of awards for Cuarón's chronicle of a middle-class Mexican family in the Seventies, having already picked up the Golden Lion in Venice, Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film, director, photography, BAFTA for best film, best film not in the English language and cinematography, ten Ariel Awards, the Goya for best Iberoamerican film and seven Platino Awards, among others.

Since its creation in 1999, the Fipresci Grand Prix has gone to prestigious filmmakers including Pedro Almodóvar, Michael Haneke, Cristian Mungiu, Jean-Luc Godard, Richard Linklater, Roman Polanski, George Miller, Maren Ade, Aki Kaurismäki and Paul Thomas Anderson, among others.

The award will be presented during the opening gala of the festival, which runs from September 20 to 28.
