With new rules introduced around the UK today in an attempt to curb the spread of Covid-19, concerns had been raised about the possible effects on the film industry of a 10pm curfew on public venues. Eye For Film has now received confirmation that cinemas will be exempt from the curfew, so planned screenings, including those at festivals, will be able to go ahead, subject to local restrictions.

Cinemas are considered safer than other types of venues because customers sit facing in the same direction, reducing the risk that anyone will breathe in particles of the virus breathed out by someone else. Masks should be kept on when moving around but can be removed when sitting and facing forwards, so it's still possible to enjoy popcorn.

Governments in all four nations of the UK have encouraged people to use apps so that contract tracing is easier when new cases of the disease are diagnosed. In Wales, contact details can be taken electronically by cinemas.
