At this year's Golden Globe awards Chloé Zhao became only the second woman in their history to win Best Director. The previous winner - Barbara Streisand, for Yentl - won in the same year that Zhao was born. Her victory was still sweeter as her film, Nomadland, was named Best Motion Picture - Drama, whilst the award for best motion Picture - Musical or Comedy went to Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, which also won a Best Actor gong for its star.

The first of the night's awards went to Daniel Kaluuya, who took Best Performance By An Actor In A Supporting Role In Any Motion Picture for his portrayal of Illinois Black Panther party leader Fred Hampton in Judas And The Black Messiah.

There was a lot of rejoicing when Soul won in the Best Motion Picture - Animated category - a clear audience favourite. It also scooped Best Original Song thanks to the work of Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste.

Minari winning Best Motion Picture - Foreign Language was a pyrrhic victory for director Lee Isaac Chung and his team, who were unhappy about being nominated in that category. Chung was diplomatic and described it as a film which speaks the language of the heart.

The Golden Globes were a little different this year, with separate Zoom-based ceremonies taking place in Los Angeles (with Amy Poehler) and New York (with Tina Fey) to reduce travel and the associated coronavirus risks.

The red carpet was different too, with no fans and few stars strutting their stuff in person but several making an effort to dress up and dazzle from a distance. The online crowd favourite was Elle Fanning in a cool ice blue gown but there was a lot of love for Carey Mulligan's innocent princess look in pinkish white satin and for Margot Robbie's summery black and white frock. Angela Bassett went all out with purple feathers and pleated hair, while Tahar Rahim was looking like a winner in a sleek dark blue suit and Josh O'Connor wore a shirt with lapels that looked like they could take someone's eye out. Jodie Foster, however, accepted her award curled up on the couch with her partner and dog, wearing pyjamas.
