If you had asserted a few years ago that a science fiction action adventure film centred on a 60-year-old Chinese woman would lead the race for a major set of US-based awards, people would probably have looked at you strangely, but today Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert's Everything Everywhere All At Once achieved exactly that, securing no fewer that eight Independent Spirit Award nominations including Best Feature and Best Director. It's closely followed by Todd Field's music-themed biopic Tár, with seven, including a nod to Cate Blanchett for Best Lead Performer.
